Fiber internet carries data as pulses of light through strands of glass about as thin as a human hair. Light travels through glass with very little signal loss, so fiber can deliver much higher speeds than copper phone lines or coaxial TV cable, and it keeps those speeds over long distances.
The biggest practical difference you will notice is upload speed. Cable and 5G plans usually upload far slower than they download. Most fiber plans are symmetrical: a 1 Gig plan uploads about as fast as it downloads. That matters for video calls, sending large files, backing up photos to the cloud, streaming to Twitch or YouTube, and working from home.
When people say “fiber,” they usually mean fiber to the home (FTTH), where the glass line runs all the way into your house.
